Samples from Delhi and Gwalior zoos test positive for bird flu virus; centre issues guidelines

NEW DELHI: Even as the strain of virus found in the cases of bird flu or avian influenza in Delhi and Gwalior zoos is "less infective" having no known case of impact on human, the Centre on Friday issued necessary guidelines to state governments and zoo authorities across the country for "control and containment" of infection.

It also asked specialised institutions in Bhopal and Jallandhar to investigate the outbreak thoroughly to "determine the source of infection so that zoo authorities across the country can implement suitable strategy to prevent the ingress of the disease to captive birds".

Though the cases of both Delhi and Gwalior incidents tested positive, it confirmed the strain of H5N8 avian influenza virus which is not as "infective" as the H5N1 virus. The H5N8 virus does not have any record of affecting human beings.
