Avian influenza #H5N8 confirmed in a domestic poultry stock in Burgenland
There is no danger for consumers. *** The veterinary administration of Burgenland confirms the occurrence of highly pathogenic H5N8 virus in poultry farming in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung.
There is a pond at the site of the livestock farm, which is also used by wild birds.
It is currently assumed that there has been an entry of the disease through the wild birds.
The fears of the transmission of avian influenza from wild to domestic poultry have existed for some time and has led to Austria's stabling requirements for poultry in the previous week.
The company was immediately closed by the official veterinarian. The animals of the poultry stock are now protected against animal welfare, the animal carcasses are harmlessly eliminated and the plant is then cleaned and disinfected.
A protected zone (radius at least 3 km) and a monitoring zone (radius at least 10 km) are drawn around the affected operation. Within the protection zone, all poultry holdings are inspected by an official veterinarian.
There is no danger for consumers as there is so far no evidence that the subtype H5N8 is dangerous for humans.
The already ordered measures be respected nationally and also be controlled:
- In all poultry farms biosecurity measures must be respected;
- The outdoor rearing of poultry is forbidden - the poultry shall so are housed, that there can be no contact with wild birds, either stabling or at least upwardly covered entertainment (networks are not sufficient)
- All suspect birds (drop in egg production, waste of Food intake, increased deaths) must be reported to the competent veterinary authority;
- Discarded waterfowl and birds of prey are to be reported to the competent official veterinarian.
It should be noted that the negligent spread of animal diseases constitutes a criminal offense to be prosecuted. Therefore, the entry of locked and suspicious establishments is to be omitted by non-business persons and the instructions of the local authorities are to be followed accordingly.
