Can H5N8 be transmitted to humans?
So far there are no cases of human infections with the detected H5N8 virus worldwide, according to the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut.
However, since influenza viruses naturally change constantly through mutations, an infection risk can not be completely ruled out.
Nevertheless, the experts consider the risk of infection for humans with this viral type very unlikely.
Experiments in the high-security laboratories of the institute are intended to clarify whether this pathogen is in principle able to pass over to mammals.
