Bird flu alert on Lake Constance
The bird flu is back again. An avian influenza virus of subtype H5N8 has been detected in five wild birds at the Vorarlberger Bodensee bank. Landrat Erich Schwärzler (ÖVP) recommends for the first time stabling for poultry.
The endangered wild birds - herons and a table - were found on the weekend at the Vorarlberger Seeufer (Rheindelta area). On the German and Swiss shores of Lake Constance more than 100 dead water birds, especially herons, were discovered. Also from Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Schleswig-Holstein were reported this week cases of bird flu of subtype H5N8. In Hungary, an operation with turkeys is also affected by the disease, also known as avian influenza. The current accumulation of this disease is probably due to the migration of wild birds to the south.
